The Wright brothers (Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright) invented the first successful airplane in 1903. This incident marked the beginning of the pioneer era of aviation. After two years, they built and flew the first fully practical airplane. Always the Wright brothers worked on different mechanical projects and scientific research, and also they closely followed the research of German aviator Otto Lilienthal. The Wright brothers decided to start their own experiments with flight after the death of Otto Lilienthal from a glider crash.
Wilbur and Orville tried to find out how to design wings for flight. They observed that birds angled their wings for balance and control and tried to emulate this. Later, this concept was called “wing warping.” When they added a moveable rudder, the Wright brothers succeeded in flying the first free, controlled flight on December 17, 1903. Wilbur flew for 59 seconds, over a distance of 852 feet. It is an extraordinary achievement in their path. This aircraft was preserved and exhibited in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
