Manuel Noriega, the former dictator of Panama, surrendered to the United States on January 3, 1990. He ruled Panama as a military strongman. Also, Noriega was accused of widespread human rights abuses, corruption, and drug trafficking. After a military invasion by the United States in 1989, Noriega obtained refuge in the Vatican embassy in Panama City. However, he eventually surrendered to the United States forces. Later, he was transported to Miami and imprisoned in the United States on drug trafficking charges.
