International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is celebrated on 29th May. This day provides an opportunity to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their invaluable contribution, dedication, and courage. Also, this day leads to honoring the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace under the United Nation flag since 1948.
International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was designated by the United Nations General Assembly from Resolution 57/129 on December 11th, 2002 as per an official request of the Ukrainian Peacekeepers Association and the Government of Ukraine. This day was first celebrated in 2003. Also, 29th May is the anniversary of the creation of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in 1948 to monitor the Armistice Agreement after the Arab-Israeli War. It was the first ever United Nations peacekeeping mission.
Peacekeeping is helped to save countless lives around the world. Further, it brought peace and stability to many countries over the decades. Since 1948, more than 1 million men and women served in 72 United Nations peacekeeping operations, including military, police, and civilian personnel. Peacekeepers directly impact to lives of millions of people all over the world such as helping people recover, rebuilding, remaining safe after periods of conflict, and serving the cause of peace and reconciliation. Civilian and uniformed personnel in peacekeeping missions support to the protection of civilians, build peace and stability, recovery, development, and guide political solutions in many conflict-affected countries.
