Date : 12th May
International Nurses Day is celebrated on 12 May every year around the world. This day is observed to mark the contributions that nurses make to society. As well, International Nurses Day is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who was the founder of modern nursing. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) leads the celebrations on International Nurses Day.
As per the history of International Nurses Day, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965. Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, proposed to President Dwight D. Eisenhower for proclaiming "Nurses' Day" in 1953. But the President did not approve it. After, in January year 1974, May 12th was chosen to celebrate International Nurses Day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.
Every year the International Council of Nurses prepares and distributes the International Nurses' Day Kit. It contains educational and public information materials for use by nurses everywhere.
