The bicycle is an affordable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. It contributes to clean air on our planet. Also, this is a sustainable transport system that helps economic growth, reduces inequalities in the communities, and fights against climate change. Considering the benefits of using the bicycle, the United Nations General Assembly decided to declare World Bicycle Day.
World Bicycle Day is celebrated on 3rd June. This day is an international day. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 3rd June as World Bicycle Day in April 2018. To promote the United Nations Resolution for World Bicycle Day, Leszek Sibilski who was a United States Professor started a grassroots campaign with his sociology class. The original United Nations Blue and White #June3WorldBicycleDay logo was designed by Isaac Feld, and Professor John E. Swanson did the accompanying animation. This logo depicts various types of bicyclists who are riding around the world. It gives a message that the bicycle serves all of humanity and bridges the gap between people from different societies.
The resolution declaring June 3 as World Bicycle Day was unanimously adopted by all 193 Member States of the United Nations General Assembly on April 12th, 2018. This resolution was greatly supported by Turkmenistan and co-sponsored by around 56 countries. The resolution for World Bicycle Day acknowledges the uniqueness, longevity, and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries. Also, it highlights the bike is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.
The bicycle is a symbol of sustainable transport. It conveys a positive message to our physical and mental health. Also, it provides a good impact on the economy and the environment. Therefore, the United Nations General Assembly welcomed initiatives to organize bicycle rides at the national and local levels. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), walking and cycling are the pathways for achieving great health. It provides benefits such as reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and even death.
